For those of you wondering about the fate of Death Row inmate Troy Davis, there is no ruling yet from the Supreme Court. According to Amnesty International they will convene next on the tenth, with the fourteenth being the next day they will issue orders.
The Supreme Court issued a stay of execution just two hours before Mr. Davis was to be electrocuted to death. He has spent the past seventeen years on Death Row, despite the fact that seven out of the ten witnesses have recanted their statements. Reasons ranged from pressure from the police to the fact that they were illiterate, yet signed a statement that they could not read. One of the two who is still behind his statement, is Sylvester "Red" Coles, whom investigators now believe is the real culprit.
If you are wondering if there is anything further that could help this innocent man live, you can help. In an ode to Swift's Modest Proposal, I wrote my own Modest Proposal. I doubt very seriously that it's likely to happen! Instead, please follow the recommendations of Amnesty International:
The Georgia Board has the power to step in at any point, so we encourage you to continue to collect letters and petitions asking them to issue clemency. These letters are being collected in Amnesty International's Atlanta office to be delivered to the Board at the appropriate time. Please do not send your letters directly to the Board. Take action below, or fax your letter to 404-876-2276.
